What is learned non-use?

Learned non-use is when someone stops using their affected or involved limbs after a stroke.
While it can be detrimental to recovery, it’s not something that someone does intentionally.
Usually, this happens because it’s easier and takes less time to use the uninvolved side to get stuff done!
There’s a natural tendency to go the path of least resistance.
However, as I said, learned non-use can slow or stop someone’s ability to make progress on the involved side.
So, how can you or a loved one avoid learned non-use in your recovery?
