5 simple things you can do to start rebuilding your CONFIDENCE

1. A “just-right” challenge.
This challenge can be in several different areas. Regardless of the limitations you’re experiencing (physical, cognitive, emotional), try to find something that’s not too easy but still achievable. Giving yourself a challenge and being able to meet that challenge can help give your confidence a boost.
2. Start slowly.
If you’re trying to get back to something important to you, don’t rush in. Rushing and trying to just do it will likely result in failure, which will emotionally bring you back down. Know that it’s not a race.
3. Break it down.
Think about the thing you’re trying to do. Break it down into its component pieces (this is my specialty as an OT!). Start with one piece/section and once you’ve mastered that, try the next. Having these little successes can really build your confidence.
4. Show-up.
One of the best things you can do to boost confidence is to show up for yourself. If you say you’re going to work on something at a specific time, do it. Set an alarm or have someone remind you.
5. Track.
Progress is hard to measure over time if you’re not tracking it. Keep a recovery journal where you can write down what you’re able to do and what you’re working towards. It might surprise you when you read the first entry and see how much has changed!
Thank you so much, Elyse!
